Volcanic activity context

Volcanoes: activity without an approved live source

Volcanic activity ranges from background behavior and unrest to eruptions with very different local and regional effects. A responsible global page needs a stable volcano identity, observation date, activity description, alert context, and provenance. It cannot treat a general disaster alert as a substitute for an approved authoritative volcano dataset.

Current volcano component

The normalized model is ready to accept background, unrest, eruption, alert, and intensity fields from a replaceable approved source. It is deliberately not coupled to one provider.

No approved production volcano source is available. Smithsonian GVP remains conditional, so the page shows no live volcano list, persistent history, synchronization result, or reassuring zero-risk score.

Volcanic activity context

Why a disaster alert cannot become a volcano catalog

GDACS may publish a broad volcanic disaster event under its approved contract, but that row describes GDACS context and retains its own provider identity. It does not establish a canonical volcano, long-term activity state, or authoritative eruption history. Promoting it would mix source purposes and fabricate coverage.

The source-independent score engine can still be tested with controlled typed fixtures. Production behavior is different: missing volcano evidence lowers overall completeness, withholds volcano Reasons to Chill, and keeps the global result provisional or unavailable according to configuration. Local observatories remain the authority for alerts and instructions.

Methodology

Fields the future adapter must preserve

  1. Activity state

Background, unrest, and eruption observations need dates and an identified reporting authority.

  2. Alert level

Provider alert terminology must be mapped explicitly instead of guessed from descriptive prose.

  3. Eruption intensity

VEI or another measure contributes only when an approved source supplies it for the event.

Freshness state

Missing volcano data stays missing

Without an approved current observation, freshness is unavailable and completeness is zero for this component. No historical fixture or GDACS substitute is allowed to masquerade as live coverage.

A future volcano record would require Smithsonian GVP attribution plus the exact dataset and observation context that permission covers.

Conditional. Production ingestion, scraping, synchronization, persistent storage, and normalized redistribution remain blocked pending written clarification.
