Today's approach window

Asteroids today: interpreting a calendar-day window

A calendar-day approach view is a scheduling lens, not a danger meter. Objects can have widely different sizes, velocities, uncertainties, and miss distances, while the date itself says nothing about impact probability. This page explains the fields a verified daily view would show and why the source-rights blocker leaves the production panel intentionally empty.

Approaches scheduled for today

A compliant daily list would preserve provider object identity, approach time in UTC, orbiting body, miss distance, velocity, source update time, and uncertainty where supplied. It would not sort by fear.

No live approach rows are displayed because the proposed CNEOS source remains conditional for commercial persistence and redistribution. The absence of rows here must not be read as an empty official approach calendar.

Today's approach window

Why today's nearest object may still be routine

Astronomical distance is easy to misread outside scale. A miss distance that sounds small compared with interplanetary space can still be far beyond Earth, and a distance ranking omits object size and orbital uncertainty. The daily page therefore treats proximity as descriptive geometry, not a standalone severity score.

Approach predictions may shift as observations improve. A verified list would disclose timestamps and link to the provider, while any impact-risk statement would require a separate source record. Because usage permission is unresolved, controlled test fixtures remain confined to pure tests and never appear as if they were today's sky.

Methodology

Fields a daily approach needs

  1. UTC approach time

A precise shared time boundary avoids local-date ambiguity for a global audience.

  2. Miss distance and velocity

Geometry is presented with units and never relabeled as impact probability.

  3. Provider revision

The source update time tells readers whether the calculation is still current.

Freshness state

The daily window can expire

Today's label depends on both the UTC date and a current provider calculation. Once the observation is stale or the source is unavailable, the page withdraws the list and explains the gap.

Potential close-approach context would be attributed to NASA/JPL CNEOS with the applicable provider timestamp and object identity.

Conditional. Production ingestion, persistent storage, and normalized redistribution remain blocked pending sufficiently explicit usage confirmation.
